Fake Profiles on Social Media

Fake social media profiles have become an increasingly common source of online deception, privacy risks, and emotional harm. While previous research has primarily focused on automated detection methods, this project adopts a victim-centered perspective to better understand the experiences and challenges associated with fake profiles.

Through semi-structured interviews with 26 participants, we explored how individuals recognized fake profiles, their emotional reactions, the strategies they used to respond, and how social media platforms can better support users through human-centered design. This research was presented at the 27th ACM SIGCHI Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work & Social Computing (CSCW 2024) in San José, Costa Rica. See the poster below. 👇
